Show your picture in Google Search Results

Hey! Ever wondered why some people’s faces are showing in google search ? How do they do it? Well it’s very simple. Just follow the below steps to get Google to display your profile in their search results.

Why to do this?

First of all let me tell you why its important. Because you would be wondering why should you do this? How would you benefit from doing this?  You will get the answer after reading the below 2 points. Just look at the search results below. Which one you feel like clicking?

Google rich snippet

  1. It makes your link highlighted from the rest who do not have it and so attracts more attention.
  2. It’s rumored that authorship is going to be a huge SEO signal in the near future so that may be another good reason to do this.
  3. According to a study if you add an image, your number of clicks will increase by around 150% which is really huge.  So why miss out this opportunity to get this unfair advantage in search results. 🙂

So lets start how to do this!

Step 1) Create an “About  me” page or “Author’s page”

This was a simple one for me as i already had a About me page on my blog which most of the bloggers do have for describing about their professional, personal backgrounds. In case you do not have it, you need to create one ad then proceed further.
On this About me page, I included a link to my Google+ account, which has a rel=”me” attribute on it. Here’s the code that I used for this link:

<a href="" rel="me">My Google+ Profile</a>

Note: You need to put your Google Id in place of “YOURID” . To get your id click profile on left menu on your google+ page. Now look at the url.

Google id

Replace this number to “YOURID” as this is your Google Id. This is how i added on my blog:

Step 2) Verify Authorship

Now add this link on your websites header, sidebar or footer in order to prove the authority of the content on website:

<a href="" rel="author" target="blank">Join me on Google+</a>

Note: Don’t remove rel=”author” otherwise this method will not work and replace YOURID with Google ID.
You can change the text “Join me on Google+” to whatever you want.

Example of author tag on my blog:

Step 3) Set yourself Contributor

Now go to your Google+ profile page and click on “Edit profile”. There you will find a option of “Contributor To” as shown. Add your websites “home page” url and “author page” over here.etechdiary_contributor

Step 4) Select to show
Step 5) Preview it

Hey! That’s all you need to do. Now you can easily preview how it will show up in search results by this Google Rich Snippet Tool. It should show up your image if you have followed all the instructions properly.

Hope you liked it. Any queries, advice, feedback or comments are most welcome.

Nice post. I learn something new and challenging on blogs I
stumbleupon on a daily basis. It’s always helpful to read through articles from other authors and practice a little something from other websites.

  2. Chris Wall says:

I have followed the instructions on the site and I have checked the Rich Snippet tool and all seems to be working except on Google. It is also linking to my Bussiness page instead of my account.

    Is it because:
1)I don’t have enough people in my circles for Google to care.
2)My page is linked but my authorship is also linked and it’s confused.
3)Something else that isn’t making sense to me.

Any help would be great thanks 🙂

      Hi Chris.
Your rich snippets, if tested and shown to be fine, will display when Google’s crawler comes back to your site and that particular page gets reindexed. Once they update their index with the new content of your page, rich snippets will appear.

How long does this take? You can look at log files or webmaster tools to see how often Google crawls your site. You can add new content to your blog to woo the crawler back to your domain. But it is different for everyone. If ESPN did this to an article it would be updated by the end of the day. If my grandma did this to her blog it might take weeks. Just depends on your crawl rate.
Hope you get it soon 🙂

      Hi Akiee
If image is showing up in testing then no need to worry, you have followed everything precisely. It does take few days to show up on Google and it depends on your site crawl rate. So wait for your turn 🙂

Hi! Great article – it was a lot of help. I have a complicated question…G+ recently made me change my name from SuperMommy SG on my G+ profile to show my real name. Now my picture no longer shows up in Google searches. The author of all of my posts is SuperMommy. Only my About page shows my real name. According to the Google Rich Snippet tool, it says that everything is verified except that the “author” cannot be found. Basically my real name does not show up on the page, so it cannot verify my authorship. What do you suggest I do? Should I embed my real name in the header, footer, side bar – will that help? Thank you in advance for you help. 🙂

      Hi! SuperMommy
Your authorship is not working as it is not verified using rel=”author” tag. You need to do the following:
      1) Link your Google plus profile from About page using rel=”me” tag.
      2) Add rel=”author” tag in Stay Connected section for Google plus account.
      3) Add yourself as contributor in Google plus account
For more detials read the article and follow the steps from the beginning. Hope it helps.

I’ve been looking for this information for ages and finally I found someone who explained it clearly enough so I could do that.

    Thanks for that Nishant.

    its showing like this
    what is it mean ?
Email verification has not established authorship for this webpage.
Email address on the domain has been verified on this profile: No
Public contributor-to link from Google+ profile to Yes
Automatically detected author name on webpage: Not Found.

Thank you Nishant for sharing this tip. I was curious to know how webmasters show their photo icon with their website description in Google search results. I have a question: Can I use my company logo here instead of my own photo? Is it allowed by Google Search and Google Plus TOS?

Graet, I successfully completed the whole procedure, though it was a puzzle for me but i made it. Just only because of your perfect presentation. Thanks a lot for this perfect guidance.

      Hi Anil,
Please wait for the Google to crawl your site (depends on your sites crawling frequency). You should get it in search results within a max time frame of 15-20 days.
