There are several factors for optimizing a site. According to Google it has over 200 factors for ranking a site in search results. These factors can be classified under three categories for a broader view. We will be discussing mostly about the categories and the factors falling under that category. We have differentiated the factors on the basis of their priorities (+3 for maximum and +1 for minimum priority). We have also covered the violations and differentiated it by negative numbers (-1 for low risk and -3 for high risk). So lets get started:

1) On-Page Site Factors

On page site factors refer to those elements which are in complete control of the web publisher. A publisher can take charge of these factors and modify it to meet any requirements. For eg: Type of content you published, Are you giving signals in your code to inform search engines, do you have the right linking structure?

On Page SEO Factors

1) +3 carries the most weightage and is most effective in improving rankings while +1 carries the least weightage and is less important than +3 and +2.
2) -3 is the most risky factor and -1 is comparatively risky than -3 and -2 .

a) Content Research: Good research of the topic you are about to write your next post.
b) Content Quality: It refers to the quality of the content.
c) Titles: The title should be interesting and should also contain keywords.
d) Backlinks: Quality of backlinks on site.
e) Description: It refers to the HTML tags description (meta tags, alt tags)
f) Fresh Content: How frequently the content is updated.
g) Customized Url: Urls should also be user friendly (like: etechdiary.com/seo-tips instead of etechdiary.com/p=123)
h) Speed: Loading time of the website should be as less as possible.
i) Site structure: Overall structure of the site (i.e the internal navigation)

2) Off-Page Site Factors

Off page site factors refer to those elements which are not in direct control of web publisher. These factors play an important role in search rankings because relying completely on On page factors can result irrelevant results. Off page factors give search engines an idea about your online influence all over the internet. These factors include Link building, sitemap submission, social media influence, etc.

Off Page SEO Factors

1) +3 carries the most weightage and is most effective in improving rankings while +1 carries the least weightage and is less important than +3 and +2.
2) -3 is the most risky factor and -1 is comparatively risky than -3 and -2 .

a) Link Quality: Quality of the backlinks.
b) Site Authority:
 Overall site worth from search engines prospective.
c) Domain Authority: Age of the domain.
d) Anchor Text: Are anchor text relevant to the links.
e) Social Reputation: Overall social influence in different social media sites.
f) Number of links: Number of sites linking to your site.
g) Social Shares: Number of shares and mention your articles are getting.

3) Violations

These refer to the activities which search engines do not like. Things which are done to optimize a site in search rankings without following the search engine guidelines can be termed as Violations. These include all the spammy activities which try to manipulate the search engine rankings without focusing on user experience. You can also call them Black Hat SEO techniques. These include activities like keyword stuffing, cloaking, paid links etc.

a) Keyword Stuffing: Overuse of keywords for SEO purpose.
b) Hidden Text: Using hidden text to manipulate rankings.
c) Site Ads: Too many ads can be a negative SEO factor also.
d) Thin Content: It refers to content which is not valuable to users.
e) Cloaking: Creating different content for users and search engines.
f) Piracy: Copying content from someone.
g) Spam: Trying to create links by posting links on many sites.
h) Paid Links: Purchasing links for increasing backlinks.

Important Note

1) The factors were categorised on the basis of negative and positive numbers with +3 signifying the most important and +1 signifying the least important. Similarly for Violations we have used -3 for most risky and -1 for less risky activities. But that does not mean that activities with +2 weightage are not important and there is no need to work on those (+1 and +2). No single factor can give you good search engine rankings. It simply means that +3 is more important than +2 while comparing them relatively.

2) We have covered only the major factors in this article because there are over 200 total factors according to Google. So i selected few from them which i thought are more important. It can be good for beginners who do not want to focus on all factors and start working with the most important ones.
